Cthulhu Wars
Cthulhu Wars is a competitive area domination board game by Sandy Petersen. These are all painted by me. While seemingly a strategic, asymmetric area-control game, the miniatures of the game are essential to the theme of the game. And since the miniatures are nicely enough sculpted to begin with, they telepathically summon the need to paint them!
The first two I painted were Cthulhu itself and Shub-Niggurath both painted around 2016 or so after the game's first edition (which proved to be somewhat rushed and erroneous edition with a badly edited rule book) hit retail shelves. There was then a delay of few years until I got the revised rules set and started painting these miniatures again. Apart from the rules oddities, the delay was caused by an immense frustration due to the fact that this game's expansions have proven nigh impossible to acquire in Europe. Nothing has changed (the time of writing this sentence was 2023; and no changes as this text was revised in 2025) and while for that reason I've moved on to other games that can actually be bought from somewhere reasonably without the use of Mythos-sniffing blood hounds, I still paint a few every now and then and have even played it occasionally.
