1940's Air Mail from Finland to United States

Air mail letter Padasjoki -> Washington D.C. 6.1.1947. Letter rate <20g (1.1.1947-30.6.1948) 12 marks. Air mail surcharge was 22 marks/5g (1.4.1946-14.1.1947). A <5 gram letter would thus have costed 34 marks so most probably this one was a <5g letter but with massively 10 marks overpaid. Incorrect rate. Even if the date was 16.1.1947 (it could be as the cancellation is far from clear), the rate would still not match: air mail surcharge was lowered 15.1.1947 to 12 marks/5g. A 5-10 grams letter would now be rated as 36 marks: still the same 10 marks overpaid.

The 8 mark stamps used were intended to be used domestically but in this combination work well to achieve the required 24 marks.

Expedited delivery in the United States 10 marks. 5 marks overpaid probably because expedited delivery in Finland was 15 marks and perhaps either sender or the clerk did not know that the expedited delivery rate was not the same in both countries. Arrival stamping in New York 13.8.1946 so 5 days' journey although the recipient was not reached.
