Pyhäranta

The population of this tiny municipality is divided into two major population centres: Pyhärannan kirkonkylä (with only about 250 inhabitants (2025)) and Ihode (with about 650 inhabitants). Other inhabitants live in smaller villages around the municipality.

Pyhäranta gained it's mail stop in 1.10.1892 (but with the former name of Pyhämaa) and an actual postal station in 1.1.1910 in which time also the name changed to Pyhäranta. Two years prior, so in 1908, Rohdainen (now known as Pyhäranta) and Pyhämaa divided into two separate municipalities and Pyhämaa merged with Uusikaupunki municipality in 1973.

The below registered cover has a total postage of 4,75 marks. The cost to register was two marks at the time and the letter rate was 2,75 at the time making this a correctly rated cover. The Model 1930 definitive series 2,75 stamp was issued in July of 1940 so this makes a somewhat early use of it.

Kakskerta

An island near the Turku city, Kakskerta used to be its own municipality between 1936 (split from the nearby Kaarina municipality) and 1968 (forced to join the city of Turku). The island has archaeological evidence linking it to habitation during the Bronze Age and it is certain that it had permanent habitation in early medieval times. The island's current habitation teeters in round 600 but is significantly increased during the summer season as the island is dotted with summer cottages. The island received it's mail stop in 8.10.1918 and a post office in 1.6.1929. 1.1.1971 the cancellation was changed from Kakskerta to a dull Turku 96 and even that was discontinued in 13.3.2009.

A Google Maps link to the island.

The below letter from Kakskerta to Halikko has a mail stop cancellation "Kakskerta". Only black cancellations of this are known to exist. The Turku cancellation is nice and clear and this particular cancellation type was in use between 7.11.1921 and 17.4.1929. The letter has a correct rate.
